Rome—Day 3: July 4

The dome of St. Peter's Cathedral.

Michelangelo's Pieta. What a beautiful sculpture! People doubted such a young boy could do this, so when it was on exhibit, the curators came back one day to find "Michelangelo Buonaratti Did This" carved in Mary's sash. Michelangelo definitely wanted to be recognized for his work.

Inside St. Peter's is what appears to be this TINY little stained glass window behind the altar. I was totally shocked to find out the wingspan of the bird in it is 7' across!!!

Climbing up the stairs to the top of the dome of St. Peter's. The body in the picture is my roommate, Becky. She's about the same size as me, maybe even smaller, so you can see how narrow this gets and how it starts to tilt. This isn't even the narrowest point of the ascent, either!

The view of St. Peter's Square from the top of the dome. The gorgeous collonades you can see are the works of Bernini--that gives me just one more reason to love him!

Last stop for the day: The Pantheon! It took us about 5 hours to get there, but it was definitely worth it.
